As an online business owner, I bet you spend a lot of time creating content for your business. (Or maybe it’s more like this: doing any possible task to avoid creating content, asking yourself what on earth to post, and feeling guilty because you should be creating more content but just can’t seem to find the time.)
Whether you’re dutifully putting out new content week after week, or your struggling to find the motivation to stay consistent with content creation in the first place, wouldn’t it be easier if you KNEW that every piece of content you created part of a strategy and was working to help you attract, connect with, and convert ideal clients? (Of course, it would!) Which is why I want to share a SIMPLE strategy that will make a major difference in the way you create content.

The easiest and most effective way to get people to engage with and take action on your content is to ASK them to.
It sounds simple, but I’m always shocked at how often I see people post a blog, send an email to their list, or put out an Instagram post without ANY type of Call to Action.
I bet you’re familiar with Calls to Action as the buttons on your website that link to your checkout page, discovery call scheduler, or email opt-in, but Calls to Action are SO much more than that.
A Call to Action can be as simple a prompt in a blog post or podcast episode to download your opt-in, a link in an email to read your latest blog post or sign up for your free training, or a question at the end of your Instagram caption that you’d like your readers to reply to in the comments. Calls to Action are about so much more than asking for a sale.
Every piece of content you create should start with the question, “What’s the purpose of this content?”
And once you know the purpose of your content, the next question to ask is, “What action do I want people to take after reading this?”
Whether it’s a blog post, podcast episode, email to your list, or Instagram caption, ain’t nobody got time for creating OR consuming content unless it’s intentional. The purpose of your content can vary greatly, but usually, it falls into one of these three categories: engaging, priming, or selling.
Engaging Content
This is all about connection. It’s about building the “know” and “like” part of the Know, Like, Trust Factor, and starting conversations with your audience. Calls to Action in your engaging content could be things like responding to a question, sending you a DM on Instagram, or responding to a poll. These are usually light and fun, and help your audience connect with you on a human to human level.
Priming Content
This is the content that starts moving your audience toward the decision to buy from or work with you. It’s the “trust” part of Know, Like, Trust, and it’s where you can give advice, solve a problem, or help your audience see a different perspective around your area of expertise. Great Calls to Action in your priming content include opting into your email list to receive even more helpful content from you, signing up for a free event you’re hosting, or engaging with your content even further by reading your latest blog post or listening to your new podcast episode.
Selling Content
This type of content encourages your audience to take the next step toward working with or buying from you. Selling content generally makes up a smaller percentage of the content you create, but it’s SO important to incorporate selling into your content strategy. (Don’t leave this one out, it’s the bread and butter of your business.) Calls to Action in your selling content would be things like asking people to schedule a discovery call, go to your sales page to learn more about your services, or buy your new product.
Calls to Action are critical for getting engagement and seeing people take action on your content. The most important thing to remember is that YOU are the one leading the conversation with your audience through your content, and if you don’t ask them to take action they probably won’t. Not because they don’t care, or because they don’t want to engage with you, but because they haven’t been invited to. And that’s something that’s 100% in your control!
