I am a big believer in marketing your business in a way that feels good, and not forcing yourself to do things just because everyone else is doing it or because someone told you you “should.” However, writing is one of those tasks that is really hard to avoid in marketing your business. Even if you’re focusing on content in other formats like podcast or video, you’ll probably be starting with a written script or outline, and you’re going to need to do some writing in order to share your content and get it in front of a wider audience. In this post I’m going to share some things you can do to make writing for your business easier so you can succeed with content marketing even if you’re not a huge fan of writing. 

Let’s start by busting a big fat myth: being a good writer in the traditional sense has nothing to do with your ability to write content that works to attract and convert ideal clients in your business.

You don’t need to be a “good writer” to write effective content.

If you believe that you’re not a good writer, or that writing is hard, that is most likely coming from some sort of message you received in school about your ability to pass the writing portion of a standardized test. That has absolutely nothing to do with your ability to write on the topic of your zone of genius in a way that speaks to your ideal clients!

Or maybe you have a belief that writing is boring, or tedious, or takes too much time. That may be coming from experiences you had writing technical academic papers in college. Writing content for your business, (in an informal setting, where no one is judging whether you formatted your footnotes properly), is an entirely different scenario than what your past experiences with writing may have been. So in order to get into the groove with writing for your business, the first thing we need to do is throw the rules out the window.

Writing marketing content for your business is a totally different ball game, where the rules are more like guidelines and they’re meant to be broken. You can forget about things like the idea that you can’t start a sentence with “and” or “but”… Or that paragraphs need to be a certain length. All of that can go out the window.

At the end of the day, the content that you write for your business has only one purpose: to speak to your ideal clients. If you struggle with writing content for your business, I encourage you to take a different approach to writing content for your business. Instead of focusing on the fact that you are writing, which is a daunting task that may have a lot of negative beliefs or ideas attached to it for you, focus on the fact that you have an opportunity to share with your ideal clients and speak to them in a way that no one else can. 

Focus on the message your audience needs to hear.

Forget about the medium, or the method that you’re using to communicate with your ideal clients, (writing), because it isn’t important. When you focus on your ideal clients, their struggles, their desires, and what they need to hear from you, you can allow the message to flow out of you, and I promise it will turn out better than you expected. 

Writing is a skill just like anything else.

Just like everything else that you’ve learned how to do as an entrepreneur, writing is a skill that you can learn and improve upon. Part of your job description as an entrepreneur is to figure out how to do things you didn’t know how to do before. You’ve learned how to do so many things in order to get your business this far, and I promise you are capable of learning and improving in the area of writing as well. 

Learning how to write effectively for your business is not nearly as difficult and time consuming as it may seem. And I promise you: the time you invest in learning this crucial skill for effectively marketing your business will pay off over and over again.
